On February 28, our mother brand, Dainik Bhaskar, had reported of a case of acid attack being registered in Meerut. The acid attack which allegedly had taken place in Paith Bazaar on two sportswomen - Shalu and Garima - had the police running helter-skelter for clues against the woman they accused.

However, the case has now seen a new twist. According to police, no such attack had taken occured in the first  place.  Shalu and Garima, both in their early twenties, had faked the attack to frame the third woman with whom they had enmity with.

Garima, 21 is a boxer, while 20-year-old Shalu is a wrestler. Both were going to practice at the sports stadium early in the morning, when the attack took place, they had told police.

Shalu had intentionally thrown herself on the floor which was sprinkled with a caustic chemical used to sour milk. Garima also had a few drops thrown on her to make the acid attack look realistic.

It was faked to pressurised the alleged woman attacker Soni Kumari, 24, to withdraw a case of gang-rape which had Shalu’s boyfriend locked up in jail. As a counter-attack., Soni filed a case of gang-rape that named Rajesh Khari, Shalu’s boyfriend, as one of the accused.

When no amount of fighting and clashes gained Shalu any result, she hatched a plot to frame Soni in an acid attack - to put pressure her in withdrawing the case.

But one mistake caused 20-year-old Shalu dearly. She had lied to police that her enmity with Soni started when she visited her father in jail but the police found that Shalu’s father was out of prison in May 2017.

Furthermore, the jail registers also pointed towards Shalu’s visits to her boyfriend, Rajesh Khari.

Now, the police is planning to release Soni Kumari and simultaneously filing a case against Shalu for ‘false information, with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person’ under section 182 of the IPC.

In addition, the police also suspects that the gang-rape case filed by Soni Kumari is false and therefore a speedy trial is being considered to close the case.
